One man is dead after a domestic incident in Forest City, NC lead to a shooting. Rutherford County Deputies appeared on the scene just after midnight where 46-year-old Steven Kelley had been shot and killed by his girlfriend’s 15-year-old daughter.
According to official reports, Chandra Nierman had recently moved to Forest City from Indiana with her three children (one boy, 12, and two girls, 15 &16) and her boyfriend, Steven Kelley. Investigators determined that Kelley had attacked Nierman and was choking her, yelling that he was going to cut her throat and kill everyone in the house.
Nierman’s son grabbed one of Kelley’s firearms and Nierman’s 15-year-old daughter used it and fired it twice, hitting Kelley in the chest. Deputies said one of the rounds grazed Nierman’s 16-year-old daughter in the leg during the crossfire. She was taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital and was released Thursday, August 9th.
Deputies said Chandra Nierman had significant bruises from the attack. This incident came only days after Kelley supposedly fired a gun several times in the house to threaten his girlfriend and her children along with reports of past abuse. Kelley had two active domestic violence protection orders against him from two different women in Indiana and Ohio, although no domestic violence or assaults had been reported to law enforcement agencies locally prior to the fatal shooting.
Deputies presented the case to the district attorney’s office on Friday, August 10th. The DA’s office concluded, based on the facts and the evidence, that the shooting was justified and no charges will be filed.
