On This Day in 2001, The USA Patriot Act was Signed Into Law

On October 26th, 2001, George W. Bush signed away your fundamental liberties to the State. With the enactment of the USA Patriot Act, the State gained powers that the Founding Fathers fought a revolution to ensure the State never has these powers again. But of course, it was for your safety! Through this article, I will explain the most egregious aspects of the USA Patriot Act.

Section 206 allowed for the wiretapping of ANY individual or entity without a warrant, clearly violating the 4th Amendment. This “roving John Doe wiretap” also allowed for the government to institute this wiretap for any reason, and they didn’t have to explain why they’re wiretapping this person or entity.

Section 215 allows for the government to seize anything at all without a warrant. The one qualification: the government has to “believe” the item is related to terrorism in some way, shape, or form. So, if the government wants to seize your property, they just have to claim they believe it’s connected to terrorism and it’s theirs. There’s no appealing to this. Again, this is a clear violation of the 4th Amendment and basic property rights.

Section 215 also allows for agents of the State to write their own warrants. The 4th Amendment dictates that a neutral judge must write and sign a warrant. The Patriot Act did away with that. Perhaps the most egregious aspect of this warrant is that it was illegal to talk about these warrants with people. The Patriot Act changed Truth into Treason, and anyone who supported it is complicit with the establishment of the Empire of Lies.

The USA Patriot Act was 315 pages long, and a vast majority of the bill was amending other aspects of current US Code. On average, it takes 20 hours to read the bill and understand the content thereof. But when the Bill was introduced in the House, it was only on the Floor for 15 minutes before it was passed. One of the few dissenters was, of course, Ron Paul. Thankfully, Rand Paul finished the job. On May 20th, 2015, Rand Paul rose to speak against the renewal of the Patriot Act, and spoke for the entirety of the 11 Hour period in which the Senate could have renewed the tyrannical Act. I think we all should be thankful to people like Ron and Rand Paul who took a principled stand against the Patriot Act unlike the cowards who chose to sell away your freedom for power, such as Jeff Flake.
