On New Year’s Day, Kim Jong-un delivered an address that has the war machine turning faster than ever. CNN, Fox News, all the rest of the mainstream media has been obsessed with the following line from the leader of North Korea’s speech: “It should properly know that the whole territory of the U.S. is within the range of our nuclear strike and a nuclear button is always on the desk of my office.” This isn’t even the entire line of this speech. While people like John McCain demand nuclear war with North Korea, it is of the utmost importance that the people realize that Kim Jong-un was not threatening the United States, the West, or South Korea. Rather, North Korea is desperate and is now reaching out to the world for a peaceful solution. One can view the entire Kim Jong-un speech here.
Kim Jong-un advanced the idea of expanding the North Korean nuclear program. But this was not to go to war with the US. Rather, this was to prevent it. In the speech, Kim Jong-un said: “Eventually, the Republic came to possess a powerful and reliable war deterrent, irreversible with any force.” He is not seeking war. He is preventing it. He’s using the playbooks of the US by adopting Mutually Assured Destruction in order to assure the survival of both countries. If North Korea has a nuclear arsenal capable of striking the US, the US will not strike North Korea. This goes beyond the Cold War. This strategy stems from the ancient wisdom of Publius Flavius Vegetius: “si vis pacem para bellum” which is Latin for “if you wish for peace, prepare for war.”
One can further see that Kim Jong-un doesn’t want war if the media would just finish the line they have been obsessed with since the New Year. This is what Kim Jong-un actually said: “It should properly know that the whole territory of the U.S. is within the range of our nuclear strike and a nuclear button is always on the desk of my office and this is just a reality, not a threat.” Kim Jong-un clearly disavows the idea that he is threatening war. If anything, he’s admitting that he’s afraid and ready to defend himself. This wasn’t a belligerent statement. It was a recognition of the fact that North Korea does have a contingency plan on the off-chance the US does decide to attack.
But not only did Kim Jong-un seek peace with America, he also expressed his desire to “melt the frozen north-south relations, thus adorning this meaningful year as a year to be specially recorded in the history of the nation.” This comes along with South Korea’s interest in normalizing relations with North Korea. As the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea draws closer, so does diplomacy between the two Koreas. Just today, North Korea reopened their hotline with South Korea.
Kim Jong-un concluded his speech with a promise not to launch a single nuclear weapon unless North Korea is attacked. America doesn’t even follow this philosophy. The neoconservatives attack and never defend. To them, they own the world and will destroy anyone who threatens that hegemony. Perhaps the neocons could learn something from Kim Jong-un.
North Korea is a brutal communist regime and is run by an anti-freedom dictator. They are brilliant in their evil. But this is not an excuse to go to war. Although American propagandists will tell you that North Korea is threatening war with the US at all times, it should be noted that Kim Jong-un wants survival and is well aware that war with the US will kill him. Rather than continue appeasing the whims of the Military Industrial Complex, America should accept this invitation of peace and allow this international hostility to stay in the past.
