Bernie Sanders Falsely Claims Iceland is the First Country to Require Equal Pay

In a recent tweet, Bernie Sanders demonstrated his ignorance of both history and economics by saying: “Iceland just became the first country in the world to make it illegal to pay men more than women. In the United States in 2016, black women made 62.5 cents on the dollar compared to white men and hispanic [sic] women made 54.4 cents. That is a disgrace.” Not only is Sanders wrong about the wage gap, he is wrong about history. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 into law, requiring businesses to pay women equally to men who do the same work. This law required America to pay men and women equally 55 years before Iceland took this “heroic” step for equality. Stunning and brave.

Bernie Sanders is an Economic Illiterate

He has to be. He still believes in the gender pay gap. He’s even bringing race into the mix. The way Sanders made the calculations he tweeted, however, is incredibly flawed. He merely added up the total earnings of white men and divided it by the number of white men in America. Then he added the total earnings of black women and divided it by the number of black women in America. The same follows for Hispanic women. Bernie Sanders did not account for unemployment rates. Bernie Sanders did not account for workforce participation rates. Sanders did not account for hours worked. Bernie Sanders did not account for the type of jobs. Bernie Sanders did not account for the cost of living. Sanders did not account for the level of education of the workers. Bernie Sanders did not account for experience. It’s no wonder Bernie Sanders’s initials are BS.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the white male workforce participation rate is 62.7% with an unemployment rate of 3.6%. That means approximately 60.4% of white men are currently employed. For black women, the workforce participation rate is 62.4% with an unemployment rate of 5.9%. That means approximately 58.7% of black women are currently employed. For Hispanic women, the workforce participation rate is 58.9% with an unemployment rate of 4.9%. That means approximately 55.8% of Hispanic women are currently employed.

Although this does not fully account for the disparity, education helps explain the disparity as well. As of 2015, 47% of white Americans have at least a two-year college degree. For black Americans, that number drops to 33%. For Hispanic Americans, the number drops to 23%. It is an unfortunate truth that minorities do not get an education as often as whites. This does not mean society is racist, though. What this means, however, is that minorities are not learning trade skills that will benefit them in the future.

After education, you also have the issue of what job does an individual have? Where is the job? What is the cost of living in that location? How long has the individual had this job? What past experience does this person have? The list goes on and on.

Legislating Equality is An Attack on Liberty

Despite the fact that egalitarianism has failed every time the Left has attempted to implement it, they keep trying to force people to be equal. People aren’t equal, nevertheless. It is amazing, however, that the party of “diversity” is so dedicated to forcing people to be the same. Perhaps equality is not their goal, but perhaps tyranny is. The largest governments of all time have unsurprisingly been created in the name of equality. Senator Sanders isn’t promoting justice. He’s promoting an expansion of power.

In other words, Bernie Sanders is a tyrant. He masks his tyranny with equality and the people follow him. He’s exactly what the Founding Fathers warned us against. Rather than aim for the impossible goal of equal opportunity or equal outcome, we ought to strive for equal negative rights. This is the only legitimate equality. Anything above that requires demagoguery. Communism isn’t cool. Egalitarianism killed millions. Perhaps, we should pursue peace, property, and prosperity instead of central planning, demagoguery, and tyranny.
