Libertarianism is about property rights, individual freedom, and free market capitalism. So what in the world is a socialist caucus doing in the so called party of liberty?
This is a very real part of the party that is quickly growing, according to Matt Kuehnel, founder of the page “Dankertarians.” According to the website c4ss.org, the Democratic Socialists of America, the anarchist members of the organization want to push the group in a more “libertarian” direction. They state:
We believe all members of the Caucus, regardless of their differing views, should adhere to three shared principles we see as inseparable from libertarian socialism:
FREEDOM refers to the positive capacity of individuals for self-determination. We believe that the freedom enjoyed by individuals is an inalienable social good and can only be strengthened through solidarity and democracy.
SOLIDARITY refers to the understanding that all oppressed people—both the economically exploited and the politically marginalized—share a common struggle towards a free and equal society. We aim to organize our movements accordingly, providing mutual aid and support to one another and deferring to the initiative of those most affected by decisions, on the principle that an injury to one is an injury to all.
DEMOCRACY refers to collective decision-making free from hierarchy, domination, and coercion. Democracy is a social relation between free individuals that should not be reduced solely to institutions or elections. We believe that democracy is always a “work in progress” to be altered or improved by communities according to their needs.
In accordance with these three fundamental values, the Libertarian Socialist Caucus is suspicious of centralized forms of governance and decision making that undermine freedom, solidarity, and democracy. Instead, we wish to promote the ability of individuals and communities to set their own priorities, both inside and outside the DSA.
Matt Kuehnel is the biggest name from the Socialist Caucus to announce his run for an office — mayor of Warren, Michigan in 2019. Upon announcing via Facebook, he labeled himself as “unqualified” and a “batshit crazy” libertarian.
Part of his announcement also read:
“I want to end rent seeking behavior. I want to base your ownership of your home on your occupancy, and we will not, as a city, aid in forceful evictions of non-violent, non-threatening men, women, and children from their shelter. Agreements of rent, mortgage, or lease are not enforceable against peaceful occupants. Thus, empowering our citizens’ safety, and pride, as exclusive owners of their property. Every home would be homeowners. Credit, insurance, and collateral are peaceful ways to limit risk in investment”
Yes, he really does believe that rent is theft.
He also made a post saying “Communism, aka the sharing of resources, has killed mo one. Making states the arbitrators of that exchange has.”
Communism’s death toll is currently around 100 million people.
The very idea of “libertarian socialism” is not compatible. The definition of libertarian is “a person who believes in the doctrine of free will,” while the definition of socialism is “a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.”
Communism isn’t cool, kids. Liberty is.
