Just four months after President Trump signed an executive order to de-fund International Planned Parenthood federally, states have now started taking action in removing the abortion provider from their budgets.
Last week, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad (R) signed a budget bill that takes away $3 million dollars in medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers.
Today, Planned Parenthood announced that they will have to close four Iowa clinics in June because they cannot afford it. The clinics in Burlington, Keokuk, Quad Cities and Sioux City service approximately 15,000 customers per year.
Those who oppose the bill and the action taken by the Iowa state government complain that it will be difficult for remaining organizations to take in Planned Parenthood’s stray customers, “but we’re waiting to see what kind of scale it is”, says Ted Boesen of the Iowa Primary Care Association.
