“Trump’s Plan to Dismember Government” – CNN
Don’t threaten me with a good time, as my late father used to say. Perusing the headlines regarding President Trump’s new Executive Order regarding the reorganization of the executive branch could lead one to believe that the Federal government itself were coming to an end (if only we could be so lucky). But in reality, it appears as though President Trump has taken a page out of Dr. Ron Paul’s book and is now actively seeking to eliminate redundancy and inefficiency in the executive branch — even going as far as to call for the elimination of “unnecessary agencies”.
The order directs Mick Mulvaney, Director of the Budget Office, to create a plan to “reorganize and eliminate unnecessary agencies, components of agencies, and agency programs”.
Further, it instructs the head of each agency to submit a plan within 180 days to improve each agency’s effectiveness, efficiency, and accountability, or otherwise eliminate or reorganize that which is redundant or inefficient. One particularly juicy tidbit:
“(d) In developing the proposed plan described in subsection (c) of this section, the Director shall consider, in addition to any other relevant factors:
(i) whether some or all of the functions of an agency, a component, or a program are appropriate for the Federal Government or would be better left to State or local governments or to the private sector through free enterprise;”
So there we have it. Trump’s evil plan to “dismember” government is merely the privatization of its functions and the elimination of its redundancies. The horror! It makes sense that market-averse leftists and neocons are angry, but this is good news for libertarians and conservatives. After all, we’ve been pushing for the elimination of redundant and inefficient Federal agencies for years. Perhaps the scariest thing about this order is that it won’t eliminate enough of them.
