Months ago, mainstream outlets adopted the slogan “fake news” to try to discredit stories coming from alternative news sources, but the stunt backfired. Since then, the term has been used to describe every mainstream media outlet, ranging from CNN, to NBC, to the Huffington Post.
One week prior to being inaugurated the nation’s 45th President, Donald Trump helped popularize the term, after telling a CNN reporter, “You are fake news,” and calling Buzzfeed a “failing pile of garbage.”
Even the 7-year old son of CNN’s Jake Tapper has found amusement in the term, and reportedly calls his dad “fake news” when he feels his father is annoying him.
Speaking with MTV at SXSW in Texas the other day, Tapper told Ana Marie Cox:
“[My son] now does an impression where whenever I’m bothering him he says, ‘fake news.'”
