According to Politico, the Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence, has hired Mark Calabria to be his chief economist. Calabria is a libertarian who used to be the Director of Financial Regulation Studies at the Cato Institute. He also spent six years as a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking.
The libertarian economist holds a doctorate in economics from George Mason University and once worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the National Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Home Builders as well. He once served as a research associate for the US Census Bureau’s Center for Economic Studies, and has written extensively on regulatory policy.
Earlier in the week, Calabria wrote a blog post arguing in favor of reining in the power of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in order to “encourage a more private mortgage market.”
And libertarians will be happy to know that Calabria stands with Senator Rand Paul in his effort to audit the Federal Reserve.
